When should you transplant gardenias?

I was given a plant and it is in almost continous shade, I live at 6000 feet in the mountains of Arizona.
When should you transplant gardenias?
If I'm not mistaken it gets cold where you are?

if it's cold in the winter Gardenias cannot make it outside in temps below 55. therefore you could transplant it into a larger pot to keep indoors.

however, if it's warmer there you can transplant it into the ground, just dig a hole twice the size of your root ball.

you can transplant this plant whenever, as long as its not in active bloom.
Reply:In the winter. Get as big of a root ball as possible, make sure that they get enough water.
Reply:Hi. I live in MS, zone 7b. I planted my daisy gardenia last fall and it's doing great. I would say you could move it now and be fine. If you don't get around to it now, next spring will be good too. By the way, mine is in part shade (mostly sun).

Hope this helps!
