My gardenia plant has white flies?

i started noticing that my plant was looking sick a couple of days ago. the leaves were turning black and yellow and some were just dead. they looked like they had been burnt. my plant is 3 years old and 5' tall. when i started looking it over to see what was wrong with it, there it was...white flies and a lot of them. does any one have any ideas how to get rid of them other than cutting the whole plant down?

Go get some lady bugs. They love white flies for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And they look really pretty on the white flowers. They won't harm your plants, either.
Reply:I WORKED FOR A PLANT NURSERY AND I HAVE A GREEN HOUSE MYSELF. THE NURSERY USES A POISON BUT YOU CAN USE SOAPY WATER AND WASH THE PLANT. WIPE OFF ALL OF THE WHITE FLIES AND TRY TO MASH THEM. THEY ARE FAST AND NO MATTER WHAT THEY WILL KEEP COMMING BACK UNTIL THEY FIND ANOTHER PLANT TO GET ON BUT YOU HAVE TO BE PERSISTANT AND IN SOME AREAS OF FL. THEY CAN TAKE OVER THE WHOLE YARD. THE GROW IN STAGES AND THERE ARE THREE AND THAT IS WHY YOU HAVE TO BE PERSISTANT.
Reply:White flies are hard to get rid of, but don't give up.

According to my plant book "Hyponex Handbook of Houseplants" do the following:

1. Immediately place a large plastic bag over the plant and carry it outside. I hope you live warm climate and not snow country.

2. Outside hose down/clean the plant daily until the white flies are gone.

3. I would try this first before using chemicals.

Good luck
Reply:get some bug spray especially for flowering plants from home depot
Reply:Go to Wal-Mart and buy some Sevin Dust. It does not cost much and it will kill those White Flys. You can use it indoors or Outdoors on Plants and Flowers.
