Mushroom compost for gardenia?
Mushroom compost is only slightly alkaline, so it probably won't hurt your acid-soil-loving gardenia. The person who advised you to use mushroom compost was not thinking about the slight alkalinity, they must just like mushroom compost. To be on the safe side though, I would add a different kind of compost, like good ol' barnyard or steer manure and peat moss - peat moss is acidic.
