Gardenias are yellowing lots of limestone in ground?

I planted gardenias a year ago, the soil is basically limerock (House is on a canal that was excivated in the 30's) there is only about 6" of good soil. I did put potting soil in the holes before planting. But after 1 year the leaves are all turning yellow. What should i add to help balance the limerock?

Add sulfur, aluminum sulfate or ferrous sulfate to the soil. These are all acids that will help buffer against the lime.

You will have to re-apply from time to time (probably yearly) because there is a lot more lime than you can possibly buffer against.

Be careful with these things, though. you can create toxicities by over-amending.

You might be better off at first to add some Holly-Tone or Miracid fertilizer. These are acidic plant foods that might help the plant re-green.

Good luck!
