I found a bush with a small fragrant white flower that blooms in fall. Does anyone know what it is?

The leaves are thick and hearty. The flowers are clustered around the base of the leaves, close to the stem. The flowers have 4 petals and smell similar to a gardenia.

Sounds to me like it could be an Osmanthus. The variety I have at home--just starting to bloom--is commonly called 'sweet olive.'

See picture of one Osmanthus species in the link.
Reply:Autumn olive, Eleagnus umbellatum. Are the flowers tubular with the four petals at the tip or are the petals completely separate?
Reply:Some of the Viburnums bloom in the fall. There are a number of different species. It would help to know where you live.
