Can a gardenia tree be grown in zone 4 of USA? john?

Yes... but only inside. Zone four is too cold for a gardenia (either tree, shrub or vine... yes, all three are available) plant to survive through the cold winter months. In fact... in the northern zones... a gardenia sometimes in the summer needs to be babied just to bloom. It's more of a tropical plant that likes Florida. But I share your enthusiasm for them... they smell wonderful!
